Gov’t Explains Extension of Simcard Verification Deadline

Government was prompted to extend the simcard verification deadline because some of registered simcard were wrongly deactivated, according to the government Chief Whip, Ruth Nankabirwa.

She disclosed this while briefing the media on the extension of the simcard verification exercise on Monday evening.

On Monday, President, Yoweri Museveni announced August 30th 2017 as the new deadline for the simcard validation following the expiry of the old deadline over the weekend.

In a text message posted on this twitter handle, Museveni said he was in agreement with a proposal by NRM caucus to extend the deadline on condition that the new deadline will be respected.

Uganda Communications Commission had set May 19th as the date for deactivating all unregistered, unverified and un-validated simcards across the country. This came after the expiry of the seven day’s deadline issued by UCC to telecom companies to verify all simcards.

Last week, parliament passed a resolution recommending the simcard verification exercise be extended for one year. However, the Information, Communication and Technology Minister, Frank Tumwebaze, said they would switch off the phones as planned.
